DRIVING LESSONS
What do you need?

You need a provisional licence before you start to drive. You can get the form from DVLA or your local Post Office. It will take a few weeks to process and return to you so, if you are keen to start driving as soon as you are 17, make sure you apply in plenty of time.

It is a good idea to check that your eyesight meets the required standard. You need to be able to read a car number plate at 67 feet (20.5m). Your instructor should check this on your first lesson.

Choose your instructor carefully - you will be spending quite a bit of time alone with them. Some companies use trainee driving instructors, they are partly qualified and will be displaying a pink badge in the window. A fully qualified instructor displays a green badge. It should be on show on the windscreen every lesson.

Your A.V.G instructor is fully qualified.

Driving Lessons

Absolute Beginners - why not book the 4 for £44 course and save some money? Look on the Special Offers page.

Done a little driving? Driving lessons will be structured to suit your needs. Your lessons can be 1 hour, 90 minutes or 2 hours long. Some evening lessons are available. You can start/finish your lesson at home/work/college/university/anywhere - within reason!

Learn at your own speed. Everyone is different, so try not to measure yourself against your friends and family. It is not a competition. Passing your test quickly does not necessarily mean that you are a good driver. Passing the driving test simply means that you have achieved at least the minimum standard required to be considered safe on the roads.

In the early stages it is really useful to do 2 hour lessons if you can afford them - you will pick up the basic skills more quickly. You can change the length of your lessons at any time, taking longer or shorter lessons to suit your pocket and what you need. Some people find they like longer lessons, others feel tired if they drive for a long time. All I ask is that you let me know the lesson before, if you want to change the length.

Intensive courses - some people are in a real hurry to pass. Maybe you are just very keen, eager to be out there in your own car. Perhaps you need to be able to drive for your job. You may be wanting to pass during the summer holiday when you have a lot of free time and don't want your lessons to clash with your studying. Intensive courses can be designed to suit your needs. If you would like to do an intensive course just ask when you ring to book lessons. By all means book a test before you start the course but be guided by your instructor. You may not be ready on the day you originally planned. Better to postpone it a week or so and give yourself a better chance to pass. Residential courses are not available at present.
Not happy with your driving instructor? Failed your driving test?

There is nothing forcing you to stay with an instructor who makes you feel uncomfortable. You spend a lot of time with your instructor and you will make progress more quickly if you feel comfortable and relaxed. So choose your instructor carefully and change if you don't feel happy. But remember that you do not want to keep changing!

Some people like to go to a different instructor if they fail their driving test. There is nothing to stop you going to a new instructor if you want a change.

At A.V.G I understand the importance of your feeling comfortable, relaxed and happy with your instructor. Why not give me a try?

Passed your test?
Congratulations! Motorway lessons and Pass Plus are available to you.

Haven't driven for some time?
Some people pass their test and then, for different reasons, do not drive for some time. Why not consider a refresher course, designed to give you confidence? No test at the end! You take as many, or as few, lessons as you want.

Struggling to park?
Reverse parking behind vehicles, or reversing into a parking bay, causes some people concern. Why not take a lesson or two to build your confidence?
Pass Plus

This is a course developed by DSA to help newly qualified drivers gain more experience. It may also help to reduce your insurance premiums - new drivers are considered to be quite a high insurance risk, having a greater chance of being involved in an accident within their first year of driving.
What is the course?

The course consists of 6 modules:-
1) Introduction and town driving
2) All weather driving
3) Driving on roads out of town and and on rural roads
4) Driving at night
5) Dual carriageways
6) Motorways.
Each module is designed to last 1 hour. (This is the minimum time, but some people take a little longer)

You may have encountered some of these before taking your driving test but the Pass Plus modules promote a positive driving approach. You will gain more confidence in handling situations. You will not be using L plates and you may find that other drivers treat you differently. The course gives you extra experience and can only benefit you. If you feel nervous about going out alone why not use Pass Plus to give you some valuable extra experience?

There is no test to take at the end of the course. Your instructor will decide whether or not you have reached the required standard at the end of the module. If you haven't, you can spend longer on that module until you do reach the necessary standard.
